One of the most disturbing feeling a human person can have is the feeling of being rejected, unwanted, and good for nothing. This feeling could drain a persons mental resources and send then to extreme actions that could even harm them. Elijah, despite the victory against the prophets of Baal, feel alone as the only one who is loyal to God. This loneliness is aggravated by the threats made to his life by Ahab and his sweetheart Jezebel. Thus lonely, Elijah feels rejected, and walks for forty days and forty nights to Mt. Horeb to give God a piece of his mind. Along the way he even expresses desire to die out of despair. Elijah's mind becomes a battle ground of intrusive thoughts. The mind is a powerful thing, and we ought to guard our minds against disconnection with the society and the community. In addition, we need to guard our minds against "the passing shadows" because of the mind's capacity to fill the blanks and lead us to sin.
